What a Certified Nursing Assistant does
A Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) is trained in basic nursing care, patient hygiene and mobility assistance. Working under the supervision of Registered Nurses or Licensed Practical Nurses, they help patients with daily living activities, record vital signs and monitor patient health.
Key areas of CNA training
- Activities of Daily Living (ADLs): assisting patients who are ill, injured or elderly with personal hygiene, bathing, dressing, grooming and toileting.
- Basic medical tasks: measuring vital signs, documenting fluid and food intake, assisting with range-of-motion exercises and performing basic wound care.
- Mobility and positioning: transferring patients between beds and wheelchairs, and repositioning bedridden patients to prevent bedsores.
- Safety and infection control: maintaining a sterile environment, following emergency protocols and standard precautions.
- Communication and ethics: recording observations accurately, communicating patients’ concerns to the nursing staff and following patient privacy laws (HIPAA).
